Tuesday, December 20th iconoclast Someone at the BBC recently described Jeremy Clarkson as an "iconoclast": one who attacks and seeks to overthrow traditional or popular ideas or institutions. This implies some heroic danger in what he says. There is none. No more than in a Radio 1 DJ making jokes about a soft target like Camilla Parker Bowles. It also implies some originality in his views. There is none. He witlessly regurgitates the sort of thing any London taxi driver will tell you. There is an audience for it, yes. Maybe the male equivalent of the Jerry Springer audience. But he doesn't deserve to be on the BBC: that gives him legitimacy he hasn't earned. He should be on Channel 5 after Police Camera Action. Anyway, well done to Colin Challen MP for having a go at him. The more pressure, the better the chance of a Kilroy-Silk type slip. [link] |
