do the locomotion
Pete Waterman, producer of FLM by Mel and Kim, spoke with conviction about some of the announcements in yesterday's White Paper on last night's This Week on BBC1. He seems to know the subject well, and was positive above all that the government has given Network Rail the right to run the railways (well track, stations and signalling). He came over as someone who would cheerfully engage you in 2nd class, and was not distracted by the supercilious public-school noises of Michael Portillo.

railways white paper
It's hard not to feel a bit of optimism about the Delivering a Sustainable Railway White Paper published today; it shows how many things have got better recently (freight, accidents) and sets out some big long-term plans. Interested parties are also being invited to form a Cycle-Rail Taskforce to address not only the need for even more, well positioned bike parking at many stations but also the demand to carry bikes on trains: already hugely popular from a starting point of not far-off zero a few years ago.
