23/10/2007: "another boxer speeding"

Amir Khan has somehow got away with a 6 month ban and a 1000 pound fine for driving through a red light at 47mph in Bolton town centre in his BMW and hitting a pedestrian, breaking his leg. Surely the 47mph in a town centre was enough to get that sentence, before you start on the other stuff. What on earth did the beak mean by "It may be said Mr Hatton [the pedestrian] went in front of the car but his injury was of your making."? For a start, why do they use ridiculous language like "It may be said"? It may only be said by a beak who was encouraged at the bar or whatever it's called to use language that is supposed to make them sound intellectual.

This particular judge continued: "The message should go out to you and to other young men and young women - if you drive like this, your licence should be taken from you, albeit for a short period."
Yes, unfortunately that's exactly the message that's going out.
