[Previous entry: "The York FTR"] [Next entry: "bring on Branson"] 07/12/2006: "coach network"
Alan Storkey's idea to move coach stations to the edge of cities close to the motorway, with passengers then switching to local bus services to get into the city or somewhere else, is worth serious consideration. Benefits: with the trailing in and out of cities done away with, it should be almost as fast as the car. Local bus services get more business and can probably justify more frequent services. Unknowns: how long the adjustment period would be before people worked out how to use the service that got them to the coach station, and trusted it. Not a disadvantage if you get a lift or taxi it anyway though. Drawbacks: slight loss of reliability unless local services are frequent enough to always be there with enough seats. There'd be a tricky handover period, potentially followed by a boom in coach travel.
